Battle Bar Arena: drop bars, get judged, climb the mountain.

A topic drops and thirty slots open. Rappers record their bars right in the app. Everyone else listens one bar at a time and votes. Weak bars fall off the rock, strong ones climb it, and the voters who read a bar right early build standing of their own.

The challenge
A whole competition format, with nothing built yet.

James applied on a Sunday night with the format already in his head. A topic drops. Thirty slots open. Rappers record bars into them. Everyone votes on a five level scale. Low scores get eliminated. Voters build prestige and their vote starts to weigh more.

He had a mascot, a synopsis, and a picture of a mountain. He had not started building anything. Haven't started yet is what he wrote where the form asks what you spend now.

The call was Monday at 11:30. The offer went out at 12:32. The synopsis landed at 12:34. He paid at 12:42. First version live Tuesday afternoon.

Four, eight or sixteen bars over built in beds. Then place sounds on the bar, slide each one to the exact spot, and hear it the way the room will.

Five levels of vote

Scroll the bars one at a time and vote on the one in front of you. Votes tally as percentages and the bars that keep scoring low get pushed out.

Anime, horror, comedy, storytelling, regional, underground. Seasons on a clock. A board where ten backers open any topic.

Prestige with teeth

Prestige comes from calling a bar right before the room agrees. Following the crowd is worth almost nothing. It cannot be bought and never cashes out, on purpose.

The mountain

He sent a picture in July: dark rock, a lit trail from base camp to the summit, a cloud layer near the top where the standings go fuzzy. He wanted to watch his icon climb it during an event and fall off it when the room cut him. We built to the picture. Dark rock, ridgelines falling back into haze, the cloud bank, his mic over the summit. Everyone in an event stands on the trail. The cut line runs straight across it. The few who break through the cloud close the event out at the top.

How it moved
Sunday night to a running arena.
26 Jul
Applies on a Sunday night with the full format. Books the call for Monday morning.
27 Jul
Call at 11:30. Offer written up at 12:32. Synopsis in the inbox at 12:34. Paid at 12:42. Mascot shorts by mid afternoon.
28 Jul
First version live: challenges, recording, five levels of vote, leagues, the board, seasons, call outs on a 72 hour clock, his own back end. His words: "everything is functional which is HUGE this soon!!"
29 to 30 Jul
Emails his changes with visual examples. Built from his images the next day: the logo becomes the app, and his PG class system with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum runs the whole thing.
18 to 20 Aug
The mountain drawn to his picture. All fifteen of his commissioned faces in. Then the sound editor: place a sound, slide it to the spot, hear the bar with it.
